Dualism is the ‘body and soul’ idea, the division of reality into material and spiritual. The ‘soul’ may be the description
of somebody’s individuality and vitality with emphasis on the inner life, feelings and personal consciousness. The body emphasises
the historical and outward associations that affect a person’s life. My path has been to endeavour to synthesise the spiritual
and material side in my life and paintings. I very much relate to Jung’s concept of the ‘four functions of the mind’. My
paintings seem to flow naturally through these in ever stronger spirals, laying particular emphasis on one or another at any
given time. The process of the spiritual and material coming together – the inner and outer worlds, the introvert and extrovert,
the masculine and feminine, is what inspires me to paint – to ‘work out my own salvation’.
